Melkus model cars database

Founded in Dresden in 1959 by racing driver Heinz Melkus, this manufacturer was famous for producing East Germany's only production sports car, the gull-winged Melkus RS 1000. Operating under the constraints of the German Democratic Republic, the company utilized fiberglass bodies and tuned two-stroke Wartburg engines to build competitive racing machines. Although the original operation closed in 1986, it saw a brief modern revival by the founder's family between 2009 and 2012 with the creation of the RS 2000.
